What is the healthy, safe and eco-friendly way to hydrate?
Maintaining adequate hydration is one of the cornerstones of good health and it’s an achievable way to start looking after yourself a little better, especially during the hot summer months when dehydration is more likely. Your choice of water probably affects how likely you are to drink enough of it, for reasons of taste, convenience and your perceptions of how healthy and eco-friendly it is.
But first, how do I know if I’m drinking enough water? Headaches, tiredness, difficulty concentrating, feeling lightheaded, having dark urine or peeing less than usual are common signs that you may be dehydrated.
Is tap water a good option? Many people find tap water unpalatable (most of us will be familiar with the unpleasant taste of chlorine) and consequently don’t drink enough to maintain healthy levels of hydration. Unfortunately we know that tap water also contains a myriad of contaminants and impurities which raise health questions: who wants to be drinking plastic fibres, pesticides, fertilisers, hormones and heavy metals? That’s hardly an encouragement to drink tap water.
What about bottled water? Historically, people have opted for bottled water because they feel it tastes better than tap water or because they believe it is the healthier choice, but we now know that bottled water is contaminated with microplastics, just like tap water. And of course who isn’t now acutely aware of the damage done to our oceans and waterways by single-use plastics such as bottled water?
So what’s the healthy, safe and eco-friendly way to hydrate? And what else can you do to stay well during hot weather?
Here are our three top tips:
1. Choose pure water. This is tap water purified of all the contaminants and impurities that mar taste and compromise your health. If you install a Pure H2O Co. reverse osmosis water purifier at home you’ll be able to enjoy unlimited quantities of pure water delivered from a convenient under-sink system. With worrying contaminants and impurities removed, you can be sure that your water not only tastes good, but is guaranteed safe for you. It’s also much more environmentally friendly, compared to plastic bottled water.
When you’re out and about, simply fill up a re-usable bottle from your Pure H2O pure water tap. There are many eco-friendly options on the market so #There’sNoExcuseForSingleUse! You can even refill your travel bottle with Pure H2O at Planet Organic stores, Hello Love and if you happen to be travelling through Paris, the Eurostar Business Lounge.
Don’t forget to encourage children and the elderly to drink more water during hot weather as they’re especially vulnerable to dehydration.
2. Snack on water-rich foods. The water in plant-based foods counts towards your daily water intake so carry around a little container of fruit, salad or vegetables. Cucumber sticks are particularly refreshing on a hot summers day.
3. Make simple lifestyle changes: wear natural fibre clothing (organic cotton, linen) and choose light colours. Don’t forget to wear a hat, seek shade and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, 11 am to 3 pm.
We hope these tips help you enjoy the summer and make hydrating at home or on the go just a little bit easier, more enjoyable and healthier for you and the planet.
